Kerala Assembly Election Results 2016;

Kerala has been a long-standing stronghold of the two main coalitions, the centrist UDF (United Democratic Front) and the leftist LDF (Left Democratic Front). The Congress-led UDF won by a margin of just four seats in 2011. Evidently, the LDF is determined to wrest power this time. The BJP’s entry has, however, queered the pitch for two coalitions. After getting encouraging response in the local body polls, the BJP has renewed its aspirations in Kerala. The party has been wooing the Ezhava community and the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) is an important ally of the BJP now. …………download (2)

The history of Kerala’s Legislative Assembly goes back to the year 1888 when a legislative council was formed in the princely state of Travancore. Since then, the council has undergone a number of changes.

After independence, the state of Kerala was formed in 1956 by merging Travancore, Cochin and Malabar regions. The first Assembly elections were held in 1957. Shri E.M.S. Namboodiripad of the CPI became the first chief minister of Kerala. The Assembly comprised 127 members, which included one nominated member. Subsequently, the number went up and today, it stands at 141.

The 13th legislative assembly was formed in April 2011. Shri P. Sathasivam is the present governor of Kerala. Oomen Chandy, who belongs to the Indian National Congress, is the state’s Chief Minister and leader of the Assembly. The Speaker’s post has fallen vacant following the demise of Shri G Karthikeyan in March 2015. N. Sakhtan is the Deputy Speaker. V.S. Achuthanandan of the CPI is the leader of opposition in the House.
